Red Cedar Watershed

The headwaters of the Red Cedar River (which flows into and out of Rice Lake) originate northeast of Birchwood as outflow from Lake Chetac, which then flows through Birch Lake, Balsam Lake, and into Red Cedar Lake. Additional headwaters originate from Hemlock Creek, which flows through Bolger Flowage, through Hemlock Lake, and into Red Cedar Lake. The narrows separating Balsam and Hemlock Lakes from Red Cedar Lake are sufficiently large that all three lakes have the same water-surface elevation. The Red Cedar River then flows out of Red Cedar Lake and joins with the Brill River prior to flowing into Rice Lake.

Rice Lake covers approximately 940 acres and is about 20' deep. Easily accessible public boat launching sites as well as our own private boat landing are available to our guests. If you prefer silent sports enjoy sailing the length of the lake or paddling the bays by canoe or kayak.

Red Cedar River

The Red Cedar River joins the Chippewa River below Menomonie. The upper miles are relatively shallow and wide with a brisk current and lots of islands, ideal for novices and families. The lower 15 miles parallel the Red Cedar State Bike Trail. Access is available at numerous county parks. The Red Cedar River is well known for its small mouth bass fishing and amazing fall colors.
